IT Systems Engineer- Sudbury
Job Purpose:
- Reporting to the Chief Financial Controller, the IT Systems Engineer will act as an advisor and liaison between the company management and IT operations, while supervising and backing up other IT staff in a fast-paced office environment.
- Effectively prioritize and manage IT projects as per the business needs.
- Collaborate and communicate with other departments to create project plans and execute them while managing concurrent projects.
- Plan, design, and implement core IT systems including but not limited to rack servers, network switches, firewalls, NAS, SAN, phone systems, backup and DR appliances, wireless access points, wireless bridges, and security cameras.
- Procure IT hardware and software while keeping track of inventory. Maintain relationships with hardware and software vendors for purchases and support requests.
- Design and approve change control procedures
- Ensure end-user compliance with policies, procedures and processes as defined by the department and/or company
- Implement best practices and ensure compliance for systems and network infrastructure
- Monitor and maintain data protection systems and network infrastructure
- Proactively ensure the highest levels of systems and infrastructure availability
- Automate repetitive tasks by leveraging scripting skills
Responsibilities:
- Assign tasks to IT team members; Participate in effective knowledge transfer to other members.
- Meet regularly with stakeholders to discuss progress and ensure the department is aligned with the requirements of the business unit.
- Perform preventative maintenance on core infrastructure.
- Define optimal lifecycles and operational procedures for the core systems infrastructure
- Make necessary changes to systems architecture as per the requirements of business applications
- Document problem resolution and maintain and update self-help and staff knowledge databases. Document internal procedures and fixes. Proactively develop and conduct training on various applications as per the company’s standardized policies and procedures
- Conduct regular audits to ensure compliance and identify issues ahead of time.
- Provide orientation and application instruction to all new and existing users on computers and other technologies, according to the company’s standardized policies and procedures
- Maintain network security, including AD user and Exchange email management, rights access within company applications and at the file level, firewall security, anti-malware and anti-virus protection
- Maintain confidentiality with regard to all information, accessed, processed and stored by end-users on computers, devices and network resources
- Renew vendor support contracts and software licenses on an on-going basis
- Participate in the design of information and operational support systems
- Proactively test, perform, and document all operating system and application installation and upgrades, and use efficient deployment methods
- Manage and safeguard the company’s data, including backup systems and information flow
- Assist management with suggestions on improving use of existing technologies and recommendations on the implementation of new technologies at the company
- Support and mentor IT team members
- Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues when they are escalated
- Take lead in the hardware and software ordering process, and budget tracking
- Interface when needed with outside service organizations in conjunction with IT Operations
- Proactively work to reduce downtime of IT systems.
Experience & Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology or Computer Science from an accredited on-site university or college (or) Equivalent work experience
- Professional certifications such as MCSE and/or Cisco Certificates (CCNP or higher) are required.
- Solid experience administering Cisco Catalyst 9000 series, Dell OS10 switches, SonicWALL NSA firewall appliances, and Cisco FirePower NGFW using FMC.
- Thorough understanding of server infrastructure and Windows operating systems as applied in a business/office environment
- 5 to 7 years of Systems Administration experience, with a minimum of 2 years’ experience in administering network switches, routers, and firewalls
- Familiarity with network monitoring tools such as PRTG, SolarWinds, Nagios, etc.
- Proven experience working on Linux\Unix operating systems to review logs and troubleshoot server issues
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Advanced PowerShell scripting skills
- Good understanding of Security concepts like POLP, JEA, and JIT access
- Excellent Analytic skills to see the bigger picture and how things are related to each other in the broader IT environment.
- Knowledgeable about ITIL processes and asset management
- Excellent inter-personal skills and ability to effectively communicate/instruct technical information to non-technical personnel
- Excellent troubleshooting skills from issue identification through resolution, instruction, and documenting solution
- Proficiency and practical real-world experience with Active Directory, Windows Server 2016/2019, Exchange Server (on-premises & cloud), Windows 10, Microsoft Office 365 (incl. Word, Excel, Outlook)
- Thorough understanding and experience with various backup technologies such as Avamar and Veeam
- Thorough understanding of virtualization concepts and with VMWare v6.x or later
- Excellent understanding and experience with client/server architecture over TCP/IP, including Microsoft SQL
- Thorough understanding and experience with technologies and applications relating to internet security, data privacy, virus and malware protection and cloud services
- Extensive experience and skill at time-management, organization, self-management, and establishing priorities
- Commitment to self-improvement and on-going self-learning in the applied IT skills area
- Ability to learn and support new systems and applications
- Ability to occasionally lift and/or move equipment and/or supplies up to 25 kg
Position:
- 40 hours per week- Monday to Friday with the possibility of staggered hours to compensate for maintenance windows
